Easy to make and highly customizable, this dish delivers hearty satisfaction with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground hamburger
  • 45 medium potatoes, thinly sliced or diced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream or cream cheese

Liquids and Seasonings

  • 1 cup beef broth or 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed soup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)

Instructions

  1. Brown the hamburger: In a large skillet, cook the ground hamburger over medium heat until browned and crumbly, stirring occasionally to break it apart. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the potatoes: While the meat cooks, wash and thinly slice your potatoes evenly to ensure consistent cooking and texture.
  3. Sauté aromatics: In the same skillet, add diced onion and minced garlic to the browned hamburger, cooking until fragrant and translucent to build flavor depth.
  4. Mix the creamy base: In a bowl, combine sour cream (or cream cheese) with beef broth (or condensed soup), shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley until smooth.
  5. Assemble the casserole: Grease a baking dish. Layer half the sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom, spread the hamburger and onion mixture over them, then pour half the creamy cheese sauce on top. Repeat with remaining potatoes and hamburger mixture, then finish with the remaining creamy sauce and a generous sprinkle of cheese on top.
  6. Bake until bubbly: Cover the casserole with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes to allow the top to turn golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • Use evenly sized potatoes to ensure uniform cooking and avoid mushy or undercooked pieces.
  • Drain excess fat thoroughly from browned hamburger to prevent a greasy casserole.
  • Layer ingredients evenly for a perfect balance of potato, meat, and cheese in every bite.
  • Let the casserole rest for 10-15 minutes after baking to set layers and achieve clean slices.
  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for added flavor punch that complements the savory hamburger.
