Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups macaroni pasta
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

Optional Topping

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for breadcrumbs)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pasta: Cook the macaroni in salted boiling water until just al dente, following the package instructions. Drain and set aside so it’s ready to be mixed with the beef and cheese sauce.
  2. Brown the Hamburger: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Add finely chopped onions and minced garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  3. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a separate saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Whisk in flour to create a roux and slowly add milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat, then stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked macaroni to the skillet with the beef mixture. Pour the cheese sauce over everything, stirring gently to combine all the flavors evenly.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Transfer the combined mixture into a greased casserole dish. If desired, sprinkle breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter on top for a golden crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 20–25 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned on top.

Notes

  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for best flavor and melting consistency.
  • Slightly undercook the macaroni as it will continue cooking in the oven, preventing mushiness.
  • Drain cooked beef well to avoid a greasy casserole.
  • Onions and garlic deepen the savory flavor of the beef mixture.
  • For a crunchy topping, mix breadcrumbs or crushed crackers with melted butter before sprinkling on top.
