Ingredients

Scale

Cake Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk

Frosting and Decoration Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring (a few drops)
  • Sugar sprinkles, edible sugar pearls, star-shaped candies, or other edible decorations
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: Sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. In a separate larger bowl, cream the softened butter with sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Gradually alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, stirring carefully until smooth and fully combined.
  2. Bake the Cupcakes: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a cupcake pan with festive liners and fill each about two-thirds full with the batter. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool completely on a cooling rack before decorating.
  3. Make the Frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in vanilla extract and green food coloring. Continue beating until the frosting is light, fluffy, and smooth for easy piping.
  4. Decorate as Christmas Trees: Fit a piping bag with a star or leaf tip. Swirl the green frosting onto each cooled cupcake in the shape of a Christmas tree, building up layers for height. Add edible sugar pearls, sprinkles, star-shaped candies, or other decorations as tree ornaments.
  5. Finishing Touches: Optionally, dust powdered sugar over the cupcakes to mimic snow or place a tiny edible star at the peak of each tree to add magical holiday charm.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients (butter, eggs, milk) for smoother batter blending.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the cupcakes light and tender.
  • Dip the piping tip in warm water before frosting to create smooth swirls.
  • Check cupcakes a few minutes early during baking to avoid overbaking.
  • Allow cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating to prevent melting frosting.
