Ingredients

Scale

Primary Ingredients

  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 egg or 1 flax egg (for vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

Optional Variations

  • Diced jalapeños or extra chili powder (for spicy kick)
  • Shredded cheese or cheese slices (for cheesy delight)
  • 1/4 cup cooked quinoa or brown rice (for grain boost)
  • Fresh cilantro, parsley, or basil (for herbal touch)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the black beans: Drain and rinse one can of black beans thoroughly, then mash them in a large bowl with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but retaining some texture for bite.
  2. Sauté aromatics: Finely chop one small onion and mince two garlic cloves. In a pan with a teaspoon of olive oil, sauté until soft and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before adding.
  3. Mix the ingredients: Combine the mashed beans, sautéed onion and garlic, half a cup of breadcrumbs, one beaten egg (or flax egg), and spices including one teaspoon cumin, one teaspoon chili powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir thoroughly until well combined and easy to form into patties.
  4. Form patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a firm patty approximately 3/4-inch thick to ensure even cooking and satisfying texture.
  5. Cook the patties: Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook each patty for 4-5 minutes per side or until golden brown and heated through, achieving a crisp outside and tender inside.

Notes

  • Don’t over-mash the beans: Keep some chunks for better texture and bite.
  • Chill before cooking: Refrigerate the formed patties for 15-20 minutes to help them hold shape.
  • Use fresh spices: Freshly ground spices enhance flavor depth.
  • Press gently when frying: Avoid pressing down hard to keep patties juicy.
  • Try a grill pan: Adds grill marks and smoky flavor.
