Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced

Topping

  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture: Dissolve the active dry yeast and granulated sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and fresh minced garlic. Stir until the dough begins to form, then knead by hand or with a mixer for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Buns: Punch down the risen dough and divide into equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and arrange the buns on a prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.
  5. Second Rise: Cover the shaped buns loosely and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffed and airy.
  6. Apply Egg Wash and Parmesan: Beat the egg and brush it over each bun for a glossy, golden crust. Then sprinkle generously with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and fragrant.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving warm to enjoy their full flavor and soft texture.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic and good-quality Parmesan for the best flavor.
  • Keep the dough warm but not hot to encourage proper yeast activation.
  • Don’t skip the egg wash—it ensures a shiny golden crust.
  • Watch rising times carefully to avoid over-proofing and deflated dough.
  • Bake on the center rack for even heat distribution.
