Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of pre-rolled frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 68 slices of good-quality deli ham
  • 1 to 1 ½ cups shredded Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon mustard or fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Oven: Start by heating your oven to 400°F (200°C). A properly preheated oven ensures that the puff pastry puffs up perfectly and becomes golden and crisp.
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Thaw your frozen puff pastry sheets according to package directions and lay them flat on a lightly floured surface. Cut into rectangles or squares depending on your desired serving size.
  3. Add Ham and Cheese: Place a slice of ham and a generous amount of cheese onto each pastry piece, leaving edges clear for sealing. Optionally, spread mustard or sprinkle herbs for extra flavor.
  4. Seal the Pastries: Fold the pastry over the fillings to form pockets or triangles. Press edges firmly with a fork to seal and prevent cheese from leaking out.
  5. Brush with Egg Wash: Whisk the beaten egg and lightly brush it on top of each pastry to achieve a golden-brown finish after baking.
  6. Bake Until Golden: Place pastries on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15–20 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving to allow the cheese to set.

Notes

  • Use chilled puff pastry to ensure it puffs up nicely and doesn’t become soggy.
  • Do not overfill the pastries to avoid leakage and uneven baking.
  • Seal the edges well by pressing with a fork or brushing with a little water.
  • Monitor baking time closely; ovens vary, so start checking at 15 minutes.
  • Allow pastries to rest briefly after baking so the cheese firms up for easier handling.
