Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons butter (or plant-based butter for vegan version)
  • 1/3 cup milk or cream (or almond/oat milk for vegan)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, adjust to taste

Optional Spices and Variations

  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, or white pepper (optional)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika for a spicy twist (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary or thyme, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (optional)
  • 12 cloves roasted garlic or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and chop them into evenly sized chunks to ensure even cooking and smooth mashing without lumps.
  2. Boil Until Tender: Place the sweet potato chunks in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  3. Drain and Dry: Drain the water from the pot and return the sweet potatoes to it. Heat gently for 1-2 minutes to evaporate excess moisture, helping keep the mash fluffy instead of watery.
  4. Mash and Mix: Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the sweet potatoes to your desired consistency. Stir in the butter, then add the milk or cream gradually. Season with salt and adjust to taste for perfect creaminess.
  5. Optional Flavor Boosts: If desired, fold in spices such as nutmeg or cinnamon, or add any variation ingredients like maple syrup, herbs, or roasted garlic. Mix well and serve warm.

Notes

  • Choose firm, unblemished sweet potatoes for the best texture and flavor.
  • Warm the milk or cream before adding to the mash to keep it smooth and warm.
  • Use a potato ricer for the fluffiest texture instead of a traditional masher.
  • Be careful not to add too much liquid, or the mash will become runny.
  • Add salt gradually and taste as you go to achieve ideal seasoning.
