Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz sliced button or cremini mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Pinch of thyme

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep patties tender. Shape mixture into oval patties approximately 4 inches wide.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of oil. Cook patties for about 4 minutes per side until a brown crust forms. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Mushroom Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced mushrooms and chopped onion until softened and golden. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well to form a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until gravy thickens and smooths.
  4. Simmer with Patties: Return browned patties to skillet, nestle into mushroom gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 15-20 minutes to cook patties through and infuse flavors.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once patties are tender and gravy is rich and thick, spoon gravy generously over patties and serve.

Notes

  • Don’t overwork the meat to keep patties tender.
  • Brown patties well to lock in flavor and texture.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for the best gravy flavor and texture.
  • Simmer low and slow to maintain juiciness and deepen flavor.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding broth if too thick or cornstarch slurry if too thin.
