Savory Cheese Croissant

Savory Cheese Croissant

Savory Cheese Croissants are flaky, buttery pastries filled with melty, flavorful cheese, perfect as an easy snack or a comforting breakfast treat. Made with simple ingredients like croissant dough, sharp cheeses, and optional fillings such as ham or herbs, these croissants deliver a gourmet touch with minimal effort and versatile customization options.

Ingredients

Croissant Dough

  • Store-bought or homemade croissant dough (enough for desired number of croissants)

Cheese Selection

  • Sharp cheddar, gruyère, or mozzarella cheese – sliced or shredded, about 1/2 to 3/4 cup per croissant

Butter

  • Butter, melted, for brushing (about 2 tablespoons)

Fresh Herbs (optional)

  • Fresh rosemary, thyme, or chives, chopped (1-2 teaspoons)

Optional Fillings

  • Ham slices, cooked bacon, or smoked turkey (as desired)
  • Spinach or other greens, sautéed and drained (1/4 cup)
  • Sun-dried tomatoes, chopped (2 tablespoons)

Other

  • Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water) for brushing edges and crust shine

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Gather the croissant dough, your choice of cheeses, butter, and any additional fillings. Slice cheese and precook any meats or vegetables to make assembly smoother.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the croissant dough into triangles or rectangles based on your preferred croissant shape and size.
  3. Add Cheese and Fillings: Place a generous amount of cheese in the center of each dough piece, then add complementary fillings like ham, herbs, or vegetables as desired.
  4. Shape the Croissants: Carefully roll the dough over the fillings, sealing the edges by pinching them or brushing with egg wash to prevent leakage during baking.
  5. Bake Until Golden: Place shaped croissants on a parchment-lined baking tray, brush with melted butter or egg wash, and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes until golden and puffed.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow croissants to cool slightly so the cheese can set before serving warm and gooey.

Notes

  • Chill your dough before rolling for easier handling and flakier layers.
  • Use sharp cheeses like gruyère or aged cheddar for bold flavor without excess salt.
  • Do not overfill the croissants to avoid leaking and sogginess.
  • Brush with egg wash for a beautiful golden and shiny crust.
  • Serve warm immediately to enjoy gooey cheese and tender pastry.
