Teriyaki Chicken

Teriyaki Chicken

Teriyaki Chicken is a quick, flavorful, and family-friendly dinner featuring tender chicken thighs or breasts glazed in a sweet, savory, and umami-packed sauce. This easy recipe comes together with simple ingredients and produces a glossy, aromatic dish perfect for weeknight meals, served over rice, noodles, or fresh greens.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (or tamari/coconut aminos for gluten-free)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar or honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or mirin
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp cornstarch (optional, dissolved in 2 tbsp water for thickening)

For Cooking

  • 1 tbsp neutral oil (vegetable or canola oil) for cooking chicken

Garnishes

  • 2 green onions, sliced thinly
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Trim any excess fat from the chicken thighs or breasts and cut them into bite-sized pieces for even cooking and easier eating.
  2. Make the Teriyaki Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar (or honey), minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, and a splash of sesame oil. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix in the cornstarch dissolved in water.
  3. Cook the Chicken: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add a small amount of neutral oil, then add the chicken pieces. Cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the Sauce: Pour the Teriyaki sauce over the cooked chicken in the pan. Stir continuously to coat the chicken evenly and let the sauce thicken until glossy, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and sprinkle green onions and toasted sesame seeds on top for added color and texture before serving.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs for juiciness and flavor, but chicken breasts are a leaner alternative.
  • Fresh garlic and ginger are essential for authentic Teriyaki flavor.
  • Allow the sauce to simmer and thicken for a perfect glaze that clings to the chicken.
  • Marinating the chicken for 20-30 minutes enhances flavor and tenderizes the meat.
  • Adjust the sugar or honey to your taste for desired sweetness.
